NON-GMO SOYBEAN

In Brazil, soybeans are grown in the fertile Midwest region. Brazilian soybean production has increased by more than 3,000% between 1970 and 2005. Soybeans are one of Brazil's largest agricultural products by volume today with China's appetite for direct trade with Brazil growing larger each year. Historically, Brazil's poor infrastructure has created hurdles to its competitiveness in global soybean exports. This is changing as China has invested substantial amounts in new rail and port projects across Brazil. Further, Brazil's main growing regions are in the fertile Amazon which produces a soybean with a higher protein content than their North American competition. Today, Brazil is positioned to become one of the foremost global soy exporters with China's increased investment, Brazil's superior soybean products, and better prices as a result of the current trade war between the USA and China.

PRODUCTION OF NO-GMO SOYBEAN IN BRAZIL

Soybean production with the RTRS socio-environmental certificate is expected to close Brazil's 2017/2018 crop with a 21 percent increase over 2017, reaching 4 million tons, with producers interested in obtaining an award for the oilseed crop grown under higher environmental standards.
The volume is small near the record 120 million tons of soybeans Brazil has harvested in the current season, but data show that this niche market is growing, as consumers are also concerned about sustainability in agricultural production, CID Sanches, the specialist of the international soybean RTRS association responsible for Brazil, told Reuters.

SOYBEANS PLANTED IN BRAZIL

A small portion of Brazil's soybean production is still devoted to the production of conventional soybeans, which are non-GMO. Brazil planted approximately 38.3 million hectares of soybeans in 2020/21 (94.6 million acres) with approximately 900,000 hectares devoted to conventional soybeans (2.2 million acres or 2.3% of Brazil's total soybean acreage). Mato Grosso is the main conventional soybean producing state in Brazil with 470,000 hectares (1.16 million acres).

BRAZILIAN CORN

Safrinha corn is Brazil's 2nd corn crop, planted right after the soybean harvest, typically in January and February, mainly in the Midwest and Center-South of Brazil. Initially smaller than the 1st crop, it was named the safrinha, “little harvest” in Portuguese.

Safrinha corn in Brazil has grown significantly since 1992/93, when production exceeded 2 million metric tons for the first time. Safrinha share of Brazil's total corn crop has increased almost nine fold, jumping from 8% to 70%

The Safrinha crop, which accounts for 76% of total corn production in Brazil, is in its vegetative state and will be harvested between May and August.

PRODUCTION OF CORN IN BRAZIL

Brazil has been the world's third largest global corn producer for decades and the second largest exporter of corn for 2 years (USDA/FASa). Following soybeans, corn is the second largest crop in the country, with a 20-percent share of planted area, on 15.8 million hectares.

Brazil's corn exports are estimated to reach a record of 1,594 million bushels, representing 22% of the world total.

The agricultural sector represents more than four percent of the annual value added to Brazil's gross domestic product, and accounts for a nine percent share of the total employment in the country. In 2019, domestic crop production alone injected over 360 billion reals into the Brazilian economy.
