Peanuts
Peanuts, are one of the most consumed nuts along with almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios or sunflower seeds. Although they are considered nuts, peanuts belong to the botanical family Fabaceae (legumes) just like chickpeas or lentils.
For this reason, at a nutritional level they are a natural source of high-quality protein. 50% of its composition are fatty acids. Among them, oleic and linoleic acids and proteins stand out (25%).
Peanuts are also rich in fiber, niacin, B vitamins (especially vitamin B6), pantothenic acid and, above all, minerals. Data from the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN), peanuts provide phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc.
NICARAGUA PEANUT PRODUCTION
Nicaragua produces three million quintals of peanuts per year, with Chinandega being the region where 60% of the production is controlled and 90% of the grain that is exported is industrialized.
Peanuts are grown mainly in the southern, northwestern and northern regions of the country and also in the Cibao; its cultivation represents a factor of great socioeconomic importance for these areas due to the high number of producers who depend on it for their income.
For Nicaragua, peanuts represent an important source of income in international trade. In 2003, peanut exports generated 28.4 million dollars and by August 2004 this amount had already been exceeded, exporting 29.9 million. It is the agricultural export product that has shown the best performance in the last 10 years. Since 1994 the value of exports has grown at a rate of 19 percent per year, being the means of subsistence for many producers nationwide.
